What's it like to be a Midwife?
Midwives provide care to women and babies during antenatal, intranasal and postnatal periods. They provide assistance to support a safe and health delivery process and avoid maternal and neonatal issues. Normally, Midwives are part of a team of professional and medical staff that includes doctors, social workers and nurses. They may be assisted and supervised by doctors.Tasks and duties
- Providing primary care to women and newborns.
- Supervising women during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period.
- Managing complications in pregnancy and childbirth through the principles of emergency obstetric care.
- Monitoring the status of pregnant women and foetuses during labour.
- Administering medication, injections, and intravenous infusions during labour.
- Writing the patient's records.
- Helping reduce pregnancy-related health issues.
How to become a Midwife
To become a Midwife in Malaysia, you need to complete a Bachelor of Midwifery. Alternatively, if you possess a degree in nursing, you can apply to the Advanced Diploma in Midwifery.
- 1.Complete a degree in nursing. After this, you’re required to undergo a minimum of two years of clinical working experience, and three months of experience in midwifery with a recognised institution.
- 2.You must be certified medically fit by a registered medical practitioner within one month from commencement of the program.
- 3.The one-year full time Advanced Diploma in Midwifery program is designed to prepare you for your career. It is approved by the Midwifery Board Malaysia (MBM), Ministry of Higher Education and Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
- 4.Once you complete this program, you will qualify to sit for the examination for certification by the Midwifery Board Malaysia. If you pass, you will be required to register with Midwifery Board Malaysia to practice midwifery.
