What's it like to be a Nurse?
Nurses may work in nursing homes, rehabilitation centres, clinics, hospitals, and communities. Working alongside physicians, Nurses provide care for a patient’s medical needs, help prevent illnesses and administer treatments. Nurses explain medical situations and treatments to their patients, monitor their progress, gather their feedback and convey these updates to attending doctors.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting physical exams and diagnostic tests on patients.
- Giving the proper dosage of medicines, vaccines and other forms of treatment to manage or prevent illnesses.
- Talking with patients or their guardians to gather their health information.
- Monitoring patient conditions and reporting these to attending physicians.
- Maintaining patient medical records and reports.
- Administering intravenous fluids.
- Examining hygiene of facilities to ensure patient health and safety.
Nurses closely watching a patient’s vital signs and treatment responses, and employ critical thinking skills to spot possible complications. When a patient is ready for discharge, Nurses review home treatment steps with the patient or their guardian to ensure their full recovery. They also remind patients about follow-up consultations, and provide contact details for additional information.

To fulfil their commitment to patient advocacy, Nurses need to have extensive training and knowledge. This includes a combination of education and practical experience.
