What's it like to be a Pharmacist?
Pharmacists educate customers on their medication options according to the prescription provided by their doctor. Aside from filling prescriptions and labelling medication, Pharmacists may also recommend over-the-counter medicines for minor health issues. They may advise customers on proper dosage, frequency, duration, drug interactions and side effects of their purchased medicines.Tasks and duties
- Ensuring the correct type and dosage of medication is provided to customers.
- Answering patient queries on medication matters.
- Checking a patient’s medication history if needed.
- Storing medicines properly to ensure their efficacy.
- Monitoring and maintaining drug inventory.
- Working with other pharmacists and medical practitioners to best provide medicines for patients.
- Staying updated with new developments in the field of medicine.
How to become a Pharmacist
Pharmacists are front-line healthcare providers with extensive training and education. You need a bachelor degree and work experience to enter this role.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Pharmacy with a university accredited by the Pharmacy Board under the Ministry of Health in Malaysia. This usually takes three to four years to finish.
- 2.After a year of compulsory service in a public hospital, you are required to finish a year of training in a private or government facility recognised by the Pharmacy Board.
- 3.Within the duration of your training, you need to take and pass the Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination.
- 4.In order to practise your profession, you need to register yearly with the Pharmacy Board.
- 5.Pharmacists may expand their career by taking a masters degree in pharmacy. They can work as educators, researchers, pharmacologists, toxicologists and pharmacy owners, among other roles.
