What's it like to be a Chemist?
Chemists work in laboratories to test and analyse the properties and behaviours of substances. In manufacturing companies, Chemists are involved in quality control and research and development. Chemists also work with government agencies for standards and measurements, as well as forensic services.Tasks and duties
- Testing substances.
- Analysing findings.
- Researching new materials.
- Developing new processes, formulations and products.
- Ensuring compliance with government regulations.
- Creating documentation, reports and presentations.
- Preparing cost estimates.
How to become a Chemist
A bachelor degree in chemistry from a college or university recognised by the Malaysian government is required to practise chemistry in Malaysia. In addition, graduates need to be registered with the Institut Kimia Malaysia (Malaysian Institute of Chemistry) or IKM. One year of working experience is required for membership with IKM, except for those who have completed a masters degree or PhD.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in chemistry from a college or university recognised by the Malaysian government.
- 2.Gain one year of working experience or complete a masters or doctorate degree in chemistry.
- 3.Apply to the IKM to practise as a Registered Chemist. IKM membership needs to be renewed annually.
