What's it like to be a Pilot?
Flying, navigating and landing aircraft is the primary role of a Pilot. They also ensure that the aircraft they operate travels smoothly between destinations. Pilots can specialise in different types of aircraft and work in various public and private industries such as logistics companies, commercial airlines, private aircraft or military organisations.
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring the overall condition of aircraft before flying.
- Communicating with Air Traffic Controllers.
- Following planned flight paths.
- Managing flight crew and passengers.
- Conducting emergency landings as needed.
Pilot training requires spending many hours on training flights, passing medical health exams, and completing various tests conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority in Malaysia. These are taken to ensure that Pilots meet standards of safety when flying and landing aircraft and are able to work with Air Traffic Controllers around the world.
How to become a Pilot
To become a Pilot in Malaysia, you must be at least 21 years old to apply for a licence. Student Pilots are also required to have working proficiency in communicating in English and meet Class 1 medical requirements.
- 1.Complete training hours with an approved flying school recognised by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM)
- 2.Submit a completed Airline Transport Licence application form to the CAAM.
- 3.You can start with a Private Pilot Licence to fly aircraft with non-paying passengers. With enough flying hours, you can apply for a Commercial Pilot Licence with the CAAM.
- 4.To increase your chances of being employed as a Pilot, you can upskill in specialisations such as piloting helicopters, aeroplanes and balloons, to show flexibility with different types of aircraft. This could lead to gaining the rank of captain when you get enough flying hours and show leadership potential in managing a flight crew.
