What's it like to be a Porter?
A Porter is usually tasked to handle general tasks and other basic maintenance duties inside a hospitality establishment. Part of a Porter’s main responsibility is ensuring the cleanliness and appearance of a facility for guests. They also carry guests’ luggage, provide concierge services, and bring guests to their rooms or cabins. A Porter may advance in the role within the hospitality industry, usually in a managerial or supervisory role after completing certain training or education.Tasks and duties
- Carrying or helping transport guests’ luggage.
- Labelling luggage with tags and providing claim vouchers to guests.
- Loading and unloading luggage from vehicles and trolleys.
- Showing guests to their rooms, suites, or cabins.
- Arranging transport for guests to and from the hotel.
- Helping with valet parking duties.
- Providing directions and answering guests’ questions about location and amenities.
- Showcasing the features and facilities of the establishment’s rooms and services.
How to become a Porter
There is no strict prerequisite to work as a Porter. Still, many companies prefer jobseekers with at least a secondary school certificate, as well as the relevant training. It may also help to have a driver’s licence ready or any other valid ID.
- 1.Obtain a high school diploma or equivalent, like pre-university programmes such as STPM, A Levels, Matriculation, Diploma, IB, or SAM.
- 2.Focus on improving your communication and interpersonal skills — these are handy skills that are essential in the hospitality industry, even more so as a Porter.
- 3.Be on the lookout for seminars in the hospitality industry, or even branch out into other aspects of the business you would like to learn.
