Security Managers maintain the safety and security of an organisation's infrastructure and personnel. Their primary focus is to prevent security breaches and deal with any incidents promptly and effectively. Other duties of this role typically include developing comprehensive security protocols and managing a team of security personnel. They could work in a variety of sectors, like financial institutions, private companies or public organisations. Additionally, Security Managers often liaise with external law enforcement and other relevant agencies.
Tasks and duties
- Developing and implementing security policies, protocols and procedures.
- Recruiting, training and supervising security officers and guards.
- Attending meetings with other managerial staff to determine operational needs.
- Planning, directing and coordinating security activities to safeguard company assets, employees, guests or others on company property.
- Conducting regular security audits to identify potential weaknesses or risks.
- Evaluating incident reports and preparing written security status reports.
- Responding to emergencies and security incidents swiftly and professionally.
How to become a Security Manager
This is a senior role which requires years of industry and supervisory experience. Candidates typically have a minimum of a diploma.
- Graduate with a diploma or degree in security management, public safety or another related field.
- Undergo field work at a public or private establishment.
- Get an entry-level job such as Security Officer, getting promoted to higher positions.
- Consider taking training courses such as Incident Response or Emergency Response.
