What's it like to be a Site Supervisor?
Site Supervisors, also called Construction Site Supervisors, oversee and delegate the tasks and duties of a construction team, typically composed of construction workers and subcontractors. They monitor a projects’ progress while ensuring that workers know and follow onsite health and safety regulations. Site Supervisors hold the highest position on a construction site. They have in-depth knowledge of building codes and daily staff management techniques. Usually, they have hands-on experience in construction tools and processes.
Tasks and duties
- Spotting and addressing potential safety issues.
- Enforcing safety protocols on site.
- Monitoring worker attendance.
- Assessing staff productivity and implementing disciplinary measures if needed.
- Ensuring the team’s high quality of work.
- Informing company of equipment repair or maintenance.
- Meeting with architects and other stakeholders before the project is implemented.
Aside from strong leadership skills, Site Supervisors also need analytical thinking to interpret blueprints and resolve issues. They use communication skills to motivate and instruct the team, and report to management. Attention to detail is important to check work quality and deal with paperwork. Competency in time management lets them guide their teams in meeting deadlines.
How to become a Site Supervisor
Site Supervisor is a leadership role built on an educational background and professional experience.
- 1.Finish a diploma course in civil engineering or an equivalent field. This will equip you with the important basics of structural construction and infrastructure. Some companies may accept candidates with SPM education. However, you will need to have proven work experience as Site Supervisor.
- 2.Gain at least two to three years of experience working with developers or contractor firms. Some Site Supervisors begin by being construction workers. Coupled with education and experience, you can advance to Site Supervisor.
- 3.A good command of Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, and English can help you communicate effectively with both local and foreign clients.
- 4.After Site Supervisor, you can move on to being Site Manager, and eventually, as Project Manager.
