Systems Administrators oversee the management and installation of online and computer networks in an organisation, providing server support and domain and network maintenance. System Administrators are expected to have excellent Information Technology (IT) skills, in addition to analytical and management capabilities. System Administrators will often be requested to troubleshoot certain hardware or software issues and ensure as little downtime as possible — hence, problem-solving skills are a plus. As they deal with support and network maintenance, System Administrators must also have great communication skills, especially when coordinating with co-workers.Tasks and duties
- Installing and configuring hardware or software assets.
- Configuring and maintaining computer networks and systems.
- Ensuring little to zero downtime between servers and networks.
- Maintaining the security and integrity of networks.
- Troubleshooting any technical issues.
- Upgrading systems as needed.
How to become a Systems Administrator
Becoming a System Administrator entails having the right IT skills and training.
- 1.Take up any information systems or computer programme such as computer science or computer engineering — any diploma, certification, or degree that will give you the appropriate IT skills and competencies.
- 2.Train further in a niche department or skill set, such as cybersecurity, or obtain experience by working as an apprentice or an entry-level administrator in an organisation or in an outsourced company.
- 3.Be on the lookout for upskilling opportunities such as seminars and workshops on how to catch up with new advancements or further improve your knowledge.
