What's it like to be a Technical Manager?
Also known as CIS Managers, Technical Managers oversee all technology systems and members of an information technology team. They stay on top of CIS systems and processes, including their development and maintenance. With strong knowledge of a company’s CIS, Technical Managers can promptly troubleshoot technical issues and continuously improve business efficiency. Aside from ensuring the smooth functioning of hardware and software, they may also monitor network security and feedback from CIS users.Tasks and duties
- Developing, setting up and monitoring computer systems and their security.
- Formulating and leading CIS projects.
- Assigning tasks and evaluating the performance of team members.
- Standardising technical procedures and writing reports.
- Ensuring that projects meet budgets and deadlines.
- Performing regular checks on CIS products and making adjustments.
- Training new IT employees.
- Attending technology conferences.
How to become a Technical Manager
Technical Manager is a leadership role that requires strong computer, collaborative, and problem-solving skills that can be gained through education and experience.
- 1.Complete a degree or diploma course in computer information systems, management information systems, computer science, or a similar field. Knowledge in IT and computer science will equip you with the basic skills in operating computer systems, understanding coding languages and maintaining hardware and software.
- 2.Gain several years of work experience. Examples of entry-level roles that lead to this position include IT Support Staff, Systems Analyst and Junior Software Developer. As you improve your skills, you can move on to higher positions such as Project Manager.
- 3.Consider pursuing a masters degree in business management or a similar field. This may help advance your career by strengthening your leadership skills.
