What's it like to be a Train Driver?
Train Drivers apply their expertise and training on rail safety and operations to drive passenger or freight trains. Train Drivers are able to work in isolation for long periods in a small cabin, maintain a high level of concentration, and make decisions and solve complex problems, fast, in normal and emergency situations. They may work for public or private rail companies.
Tasks and duties
- Inspecting trains.
- Reporting problems and repairing the train.
- Driving the train safely.
- Maintaining speed to ensure that the train is on time.
- Making announcements to passengers and communicating with onboard staff.
- Communicating with the dispatcher, signaller, crossing attendant, operations control, other rail industry personnel, and government authorities.
How to become a Train Driver
To become a Train Driver, you need to be recognised by the Malaysia Qualification Agency.
- 1.Complete a diploma or advanced diploma in transport, logistics, supply chain management, or other relevant field.
- 2.Be recognised by the Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA). Recognition by the MQA allows you to enter Public Service.
- 3.Undergo training. This may take as much as 6 months depending on the train company.
