What's it like to be a Zookeeper?
Zookeepers are responsible for the daily care and welfare of animals within zoological parks or aquariums. Their duties include feeding, cleaning enclosures, monitoring animal health, and assisting in breeding programs. Zookeepers also play a role in educating the public about wildlife conservation and the natural habitats of the animals under their care. They often work closely with veterinarians and research staff to implement best practices for animal management and welfare. Working conditions vary, including outdoor and indoor environments, and may require irregular hours including weekends and holidays.
Tasks and duties
- Providing daily care for animals, including feeding, grooming, and administering medication as required.
- Cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures to ensure a safe and hygienic environment.
- Educating visitors about the animals and conservation efforts, including conducting tours and answering questions.
- Participating in wildlife conservation and research activities, which may include collecting data on animal behaviour and health.
