What's it like to be a Farm Manager ?
Farm Managers are always attending to various tasks around the farm. No matter the season, the farm’s maintenance is their top priority. On a typical day they are busy with the farm’s administrative work, but they also perform physically challenging tasks, and coordinate with other farmworkers to cope with the unpredictability of the weather and other factors. Farm Managers are often employed in vegetable farms, piggeries, poultry farms, and cattle farms.Tasks and duties
- Budgeting and financing the farm’s overall needs.
- Making sure that farmers are tending ground crops and constructing trellises to support vines and fruits.
- Participating in the inspection, grading, storage, and post-harvest treatment of crops.
- Caring for and ensuring the profitability of the farm animals; making sure they get enough exercise and having them groomed.
- Inspecting the machinery needed for milking and ensuring it is prepared and cleaned.
- Reporting back to the farm owners regarding crop progress or any notable development on the farm.
- Ensuring that agricultural products are well packed and loaded into trucks to be delivered to the market or storage facilities.
- Checking for potential health problems in crops, livestock, and poultry.
- Overseeing water lines, airflow, and temperature in barns and chicken coops.
How to become a Farm Manager
No formal education is required to become a Farm Manager. However, taking classes in business or environmental management, or agricultural and fisheries courses may be beneficial.
- 1.Employers usually give on-the-job training where you will be taught safety procedures, how to use simple farming tools, and complex machinery.
- 2.You may need to pursue courses in animal husbandry, mechanics, and eco-farming in vocational schools.
