STAEDTLER – FROM IDEAS TO INNOVATIONLooking back on the history of STAEDTLER, it can be seen that the company itself and the ancestors of the company founder have always been ahead of their time. The history of the STAEDTLER pencil for example began already in 1662, many years before the actual foundation of the company with the help of Friedrich Staedtler. That was the year in which first references to Friedrich Staedtler are to be found in Nuremberg’s city annals. Not only did this step mark the beginning of the pencil-making tradition within his own family, it was also of great consequence for the pencil-making trade as a whole. This valuable know-how of the pencil-making trade had been passed on through five generations before in 1835, in the 6th generation, Johann Sebastian Staedtler laid the foundation for today's successful STAEDTLER company group. He was quick to recognise the signs of the times and succeeded in making the transition from workshop to industrial plant. He had the idea to ship his pencils all over the world and to have them inspire people of many different nations.Today, the company has 21 subsidiaries. More than 80% of all STAEDTLER products are still 'Made in Germany'. This makes STAEDTLER, with its three production plants in the Nuremberg metropolitan region, the largest European manufacturer of graphite pencils, coloured pencils, erasers, mechanical pencil leads and modelling clays.Through Mars Clay, STAEDTLER supplies the modelling material for the first life-size mock-up to renowned car manufacturers of all sizes in Europe, the USA and Asia - and is the leading company in this sector. In 1997, the STAEDTLER Foundation was officially recognised and certified as a public foundation under civil law which holds all shares of the STAEDTLER group. The STAEDTLER foundation is dedicated to promote innovative ideas by scientific research at German polytechnics and universities. This simply means that part of the profits generated by STAEDTLER is given back to society through its funding and support in research and innovation.About STAEDTLER MalaysiaSTAEDTLER was introduced in Malaysia in 1964. It was during this time that the Malaysian Pencil Company Limited was incorporated to manufacture and market drafting and writing materials for the Malaysian market. The founders soon found that they would require foreign technical assistance, and in 1967 STAEDTLER (Malaysia) Berhad was established when the Malaysian Pencil Company Limited invited STAEDTLER Noris GmbH to become a shareholder. Since then, STAEDTLER Malaysia (also known as STAEDTLER Marketing Sdn. Bhd.) has blossomed to become a household name in the country with strong brand presence, attracting second and third generation customers, especially through its Noris and LUNA range. STAEDTLER is also the recipient of the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Gold Award™ in the “Pencil” category in Malaysia for 2014, a recognition conceived by the Reader’s Digest Brand Survey and aiming at recognizing brand strength measured via votes by consumers.
