What's it like to be a Commis Chef?
Commis Chefs are junior members of the kitchen staff. They may have recently finished formal training, or are still in the process of completing it. Working under the head chef or several sous chefs, they learn the basics of commercial kitchen operations, and are usually deployed to different stations depending on the kitchen’s needs.Tasks and duties
- Assisting other chefs.
- Preparing ingredients by measuring, chopping, seasoning or mixing them.
- Cooking as a line cook when needed.
- Overseeing inventory and receiving deliveries.
- Mitigating food costs by rotating food items.
- Monitoring stocks and disposing of expired ingredients.
- Cleaning and disinfecting the kitchen after closing.
How to become a Commis Chef
You do not need a college diploma to become a Commis Chef, however relevant qualifications may be beneficial. Since a Commis Chef is an entry-level job, you can learn skills while you are working.
- 1.While culinary school or a college diploma is not a requirement for a Commis Chef, attending culinary schools can help get you ahead of the pack when applying for a job. Apprenticeships and earning certificates on food hygiene or commercial cookery also show your experience and willingness to learn.
- 2.Learn on your own by experimenting on culinary methods at home. Make sure to first master basic cooking methods and techniques. You can also take online classes to enrich your knowledge and skills. While working in a commercial kitchen, learn all the different stations and observe how your superiors stay on top of tasks.
