What's it like to be a Construction Manager?
Construction Managers ensure that the primary objectives and standards of a project are met at a construction site. They oversee daily operations and review contracts thoroughly to ensure that everything is aligned with the client’s expectations. They work closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and various contractors for the overall success of the project.
Tasks and duties
- Monitoring the performance of contractors, such as plumbers, painters, and carpenters.
- Executing and managing a project’s budget, timeline, and quality from initial planning until its completion.
- Ensuring that the site is free of any potential hazards and that the crew is practising safety measures.
- Liaising with a consultant to be informed of any new information, such as a revised construction drawing or a specific site instruction from the client.
- Providing daily updates to the crew regarding the progress of the project.
- Checking if all the equipment needed for the project is available on site.
- Approving purchase requests.
How to become a Construction Manager
You will need formal education and a substantial amount of experience working on construction sites to become a Construction Manager.
- Complete a bachelor degree in construction project management, architecture, or civil engineering. This may take up to three years to complete. If you do not have a degree, you may be able to become a general contractor or subcontractor and build experience.
- Gain as much experience as possible. You can take an entry-level job as a contractor to gain construction experience in masonry, flooring, painting, or carpentry positions. The more diverse your experience is, the more qualified you will be for a managerial position.
- While not necessary, consider obtaining a certification as a Construction Manager. This will assure potential employers that you are qualified for the job.
