What's it like to be an Engineering Manager?
Engineering Managers oversee and coordinate projects within the field. They are responsible for managing teams of engineers, coordinating work schedules, developing project plans and ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. Engineering Managers also play a role in the application of technological advancements by providing strategic advice and introducing innovative equipment or processes. They typically work within technology-based industries, manufacturing or engineering firms and public sector organisations where they liaise regularly with senior management, clients and other technical professionals.
Tasks and duties
- Planning, directing, and coordinating activity for engineering projects in various industries.
- Developing policies, standards or procedures for engineering and technical work.
- Presenting proposals, reports, or findings to clients, customers or project stakeholders.
- Reporting on the progress of a project at various stages and providing specialised advice.
- Keeping projects on track while providing tailored specifications.
- Reviewing, approving, or modifying product designs depending on the need outlined within a project.
How to become an Engineering Manager
A minimum of a diploma in engineering is required for the role, but bachelor's and master's degrees are highly preferred. Engineering Managers are expected to have several years of experience and qualification under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
- 1.Pursue a diploma in engineering. Entry requirement is at least 3Cs at SPM including mathematics, one science subject, and a passing score in English.
- 2.Consider taking a Foundation in Science or Foundation in Engineering pre-university course for eligibility to pursue a degree in engineering.
- 3.Graduate with a bachelor's degree in engineering.
- 4.Get an entry-level job such as Junior Engineer or Associate Engineer.
- 5.Register as a Graduate Engineer with the BEM after three years of work experience which includes design and site work.
- 6.Consider getting a master's degree in business administration or engineering.
