What's it like to be a Kitchen Assistant?
A Kitchen Assistant works under the guidance of a Chef to help prepare ingredients and use culinary equipment for cooking. They also keep the kitchen work area clean and sanitary at the end of food service. Some Kitchen Assistant roles also include checking the inventory of ingredients, expiration dates on food stuffs, ensuring that the pantry is well-stocked, and reporting to the Chef what items need replenishment.Tasks and duties

How to become a Kitchen Assistant
While the role of a Kitchen Assistant is a junior position, a qualification in culinary arts can teach you basic food preparation and various cooking techniques, giving you a head start. Experience and consistent quality is a very important aspect in the culinary industry.
- 1.Complete secondary education. While not a hard requirement, some companies require professional certificates or at least an STPM-level education.
- 2.Practice the proper way of preparing food. Food preparation is a basic skill in any culinary role and the preparation may be different for each ingredient.
- 3.Train in different cooking styles. There are several styles of cooking that can be taught if you want to specialise. It's best to look for a Chef that offers mentorship in a particular style of cooking.
- 4.To move up the ladder, Kitchen Assistants need to learn how to manage time, people, and resources as well. After gaining extensive experience you could move into a Head Chef role or become a Restaurateur.
