What's it like to be a Mechanical Technician?
A Mechanical Technician is tasked with assisting in repair operations and maintaining mechanical equipment and machinery. They are needed in many industries, particularly in manufacturing and transportation. Mechanical Technicians can specialise in certain types of machinery, such as cars, trucks and other types of industry-specific machinery.
Tasks and duties
- Checking equipment and operating systems on a regular basis.
- Ensuring machinery is at optimum performance.
- Performing troubleshooting and tests on equipment or machinery.
- Performing required repairs.
- Installing preventative measures to avoid potential malfunctions.
- Handling tools like power tools and rigging equipment.
- Carrying out hot work such as welding and cutting.
- Solving issues regarding motor, conveyor and hydraulic equipment.
- Operating equipment like forklifts.
- Maintaining the workshop, warehouse and tools area.
- Assisting project engineers as requested.
- Complying with company safety guidelines.
Mechanical Technicians can also offer assistance to mechanical engineers and help them monitor equipment and achieve project goals. A typical day for a Mechanical Technician starts with routine rounds in the factory, warehouse, or workplace to check that the equipment and machinery are functioning properly. They will then spend the rest of the day making any necessary repairs.
How to become a Mechanical Technician
Higher education is not required to become a Mechanical Technician, but some employers will prefer candidates with a relevant qualification. Some of the skills and knowledge required for the role can be learned on the job.
- 1.Attain any of the following recognitions/certificates: Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or any level of the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM).
- 2.Study a Diploma in Engineering. This is not required for most Mechanical Technician positions, but it can boost your chances at employment. A diploma requires at least the completion of the SPM, UEC, or O-Levels.
- 3.Gain work experience. A Mechanical Technician position is an entry-level job, so you can learn some skills and knowledge on the job. However, some higher positions, like senior or head mechanical technician, might require work experience to be considered.
- 4.After gaining experience in the industry, you could consider starting your own business. Mechanical Technicians with enough work experience, mechanical knowledge and connections can start their own small business.
