What's it like to be a Mechanical Fitter?
A mechanical fitter, or Millwright, is in charge of fabricating, installing, operating and maintaining pipework and machinery in factories, construction sites and plants. They work according to a set of specifications, operating tools and machinery to grind and shape raw materials into their final form as components before being assembled into a larger product or system. A mechanical fitter also inspects, maintains, and repairs machinery as needed.
Tasks and duties
- Determining specifications for components to be created based on blueprints for mechanical systems.
- Measuring and constructing components out of raw materials through cutting, shaping, and grinding.
- Assembling fabricated components into a larger machine or system.
- Complying with operations, safety, and maintenance procedures.
- Understanding and interpreting diagrams, blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the sequence of operations.
- Operating specialised equipment.
- Performing regular maintenance and repair work and conducting diagnostic tests to determine the root of problems.
- Monitoring the fabrication and assembly process.
- Replacing damaged or defective components.
- Adhering to other overall on-site regulations.
Mechanical Fitters work with automobiles and aircraft, in manufacturing, and mining industries.
How to become a Mechanical Fitter
Many Mechanical Fitters learn on the job and pick up their skills and practical experiences there. However, many companies look for secondary school graduates at the least. Mechanical Fitter who possess a Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Levels 1 to 3 that are accredited by Skills Development Department can achieve more opportunities and more competitive pay.
- 1.Pass the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or the Pelajaran Malaysia Vokasional (SPMV), which will make you eligible to apply for a vocational certificate course.
- 2.Pursue a vocational certificate course in manufacturing technology from an Industrial Training Institute (ITI). A full-time course will take 27 months or 2 years and 3 months to complete.
- 3.Complete the course and receive a Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM), from Levels 1 to 3. Many companies prefer a SKM Certificate Level 2, at the minimum.
