What's it like to be a Pharmacy Assistant?
Pharmacy Assistants provide administrative support to Pharmacists. They handle the non-technical side of pharmacy operations, which includes clerical duties. They typically organise files and inventory, answer phone calls, and act as cashiers. In retail pharmacies, they may be tasked to take on a customer-facing role by selling over-the-counter products. In hospitals or clinics, Pharmacy Assistants may deliver medicines to patients and healthcare professionals.Tasks and duties
- Assisting pharmacists in managing prescriptions.
- Greeting customers.
- Referring medication-related questions to pharmacists.
- Maintaining and ordering inventory.
- Receiving, unloading, arranging and keeping records of deliveries.
- Putting labels on medicines.
- Answering emails, messages and phone calls.
- Ensuring the neatness and cleanliness of the workspace.
How to become a Pharmacy Assistant
Even though Pharmacy Assistants mainly perform administrative and clerical duties, they still need to be educated in the basic uses and effects of medicines.
- 1.Complete at least a diploma course in pharmacy. Make sure that the course is accredited by the Pharmacy Board and the Ministry of Health in Malaysia. The course takes three years to finish.
- 2.Get work experience through an internship while studying. You can also volunteer in a hospital or a healthcare facility. Some employers may also value experience in customer service and administrative work.
- 3.Be proficient in written and spoken English, Mandarin, and Bahasa Malaysia.
- 4.You may advance your career by becoming a pharmacy technician, who has more medical responsibilities. Expand your options by finishing a bachelor degree in pharmacy, which can help you become a pharmacist.
