What's it like to be a Photographer?
Photographers may work freelance or in-house for a company. Their workplace and tasks depend on their specialisation. For instance, photojournalists or news photographers often work in various locations where newsworthy events take place. Commercial photographers who take portrait or product shots may shoot in both a studio or on location. Meanwhile, fine arts photographers sell their work as artistic pieces.Tasks and duties
- Taking and editing photos to remove unwanted elements, or correct lighting or colour.
- Being knowledgeable on various camera equipment such as lenses, tripods and filters.
- Purchasing photography-related supplies.
- Choosing props, backgrounds or locations to capture the best images.
- Selecting suitable subjects to document.
- Picking the best photos to submit to clients or managers.
- Maintaining photography equipment and accessories.
How to become a Photographer
Many Photographers have a relevant qualification. A portfolio of work will help you show your skills to future employers.
- 1.Complete a diploma course in photography, digital and multi-media or a related course. Though employers may value skills or work experience over education, finishing a relevant diploma course can give you a solid background on photography techniques. A course can also provide you with a variety of skills that let you specialise in a particular photography field later on.
- 2.Land an entry-level role such as assistant photographer. Here, you will assist a senior photographer in scheduling shoots, editing photos, and setting up lighting, backgrounds and equipment before the shoot.
- 3.Gather your best work in a portfolio to show employers, art gallery owners, or potential clients.
- 4.Broaden your career options by learning related skills such as videography, video editing and graphic design. Some employers prefer candidates with a wider range of skills.
