Poor pay and unclear appraisals leave senior staff unappreciated and demotivated
The good thingsThe workplace has a pleasant environment with good colleagues and nice scenery, though this may depend on which department you are in.
The challengesThe salary is underpaid and not competitive. Even after working for more than seven years, there is hardly any difference compared to new joiners. Promotion to a new position only comes with a minimal increment of about 2–3%, which does not reflect the added responsibilities. The appraisal system’s process is unclear, leading to seemingly unfair increments without proper explanation. Staff efforts are not well appreciated. Communication with top management is difficult, and there seems to be double standards when it comes to Admin staff. Because of these issues, many experienced staff have already resigned. Personally, those aiming for career progression may experience disappointment.

Highly political environment with top-down management and toxic culture
The good thingsThe campus is big, scenery is ok.
The challengesThe university has a rigid, top-down structure where local staff have little say. Key decisions are made by China-based leadership, often with little understanding of the local context. The work culture is filled with internal politics and blame-shifting. HR is unprofessional unethical and does not fairly support staff. Although the school promotes itself as “international,” it feels controlling and outdated. Many employees resign due to poor management and a lack of support.

Good Students, Friends, and Environment for Working-Life Balance
The good thingsThe positive aspects include a pleasant working environment and a strong emphasis on work-life balance. I thoroughly enjoy working there with supportive and friendly students. The workload is quite manageable, with significantly very less stress compared to the industries I have experienced. If you prioritize achieving a balanced life, this place is highly suitable.
The challengesThe challenges lie in the management and interpersonal dynamics. There is no clear salary system; if they value you, they make an effort to keep you, but if they don't see your importance, goodbye. The appraisal system's process is unclear, leading to seemingly unfair increments without proper explanation. Personally, those aiming for career progression may experience disappointment. If they find a better worker, your role will suddenly be downgraded without an explanation or new job tasks that are important to the school. However, overall job satisfaction depends on each individual's perspective.

The challengesIf you are an expatriate, you will have access to all of the company's benefits, but if you are a local employee, tasks will be assigned to you, with credit often attributed to China Seconded.

    HR Management very bad
The good thingsDiversity, on the job training
The challengesThe HOD of HR is highly ineffective and seems to exist solely to collect salaries. The top management are not taking any action to address this issue. It appears that nobody really knows what the human resource department is supposed to do.

The good thingsGet to live and experience China culture if you have time
The challengesPoor culture and morale within the university. No clear role or job description offer. Often, you get to pull from what you are suppose to do and you were been asked to do everything else that is not within your field or expertise.

Work, work, and work some more.
The good thingsIf you are worried about not having enough work, don't worry. You will get plenty of work. You can bring your work home on the weekends and during the evenings.
The challengesThat is the problem - too much work. Job duties are not defined well, so you may be doing work for other departments. Management thinks we are not working enough. They are completely oblivious to the workers' plight.

job scope and job description is never match
The good thingsCan experience various tasks which are not from your department.
The challengesOur lab officers not only responsible for laboratory management and practical classes, but procurement and asset management as well, although there is another procurement and asset management department in our university. Some of us are encourage to do research, but we never have sufficient time for research activities, and research is not our kpi. Publication is just like a bonus for us, but do not contribute to salary increment or position advancement.

The good thingsA breath taking campus with a lake in the middle. The facilities are new, and KL is 30 minutes away by the ERL.
The challengesManagement does not hire enough people. Everyone is doing the work as two people. Just to keep up, everyone will work evenings and weekends. Management does not care. If you try to question management, they threaten you.

I never seen a place like this
The good thingsThe campus is new, modern with a pond in the center. I like the plants spaced around the campus. Colleagues are nice too, not too much infighting or office politics.
The challengesWhere do I start? I have worked in four countries around the world, and I have never seen anything like Xiamen University Malaysia., and I had some really bad employers. My problem is the teaching load, the extremely high clerical/admin duties, and the micromanagement from Academic Affairs and unit coordinators. The management runs the university like a factory, and they will work you like you never been worked before..

Run Away as Fast as Possible
The good thingsThe campus is beautiful and modern. The staff and students are great to work with.
The challengesThe university has a serious problems with management. Vice president micromanages the university through Academic Affairs, where a professor needs permission for every little thing. Professors teach between 16 and 20 hours per week plus endless paperwork with internship, mentoring students, and senior thesis. Professors also do clerical and admin duties such as filing, sorting files, and photocopying.
