Poor pay and unclear appraisals leave senior staff unappreciated and demotivated
The good thingsThe workplace has a pleasant environment with good colleagues and nice scenery, though this may depend on which department you are in.
The challengesThe salary is underpaid and not competitive. Even after working for more than seven years, there is hardly any difference compared to new joiners. Promotion to a new position only comes with a minimal increment of about 2–3%, which does not reflect the added responsibilities. The appraisal system’s process is unclear, leading to seemingly unfair increments without proper explanation. Staff efforts are not well appreciated. Communication with top management is difficult, and there seems to be double standards when it comes to Admin staff. Because of these issues, many experienced staff have already resigned. Personally, those aiming for career progression may experience disappointment.

Highly political environment with top-down management and toxic culture
The good thingsThe campus is big, scenery is ok.
The challengesThe university has a rigid, top-down structure where local staff have little say. Key decisions are made by China-based leadership, often with little understanding of the local context. The work culture is filled with internal politics and blame-shifting. HR is unprofessional unethical and does not fairly support staff. Although the school promotes itself as “international,” it feels controlling and outdated. Many employees resign due to poor management and a lack of support.

Good Students, Friends, and Environment for Working-Life Balance
The good thingsThe positive aspects include a pleasant working environment and a strong emphasis on work-life balance. I thoroughly enjoy working there with supportive and friendly students. The workload is quite manageable, with significantly very less stress compared to the industries I have experienced. If you prioritize achieving a balanced life, this place is highly suitable.
The challengesThe challenges lie in the management and interpersonal dynamics. There is no clear salary system; if they value you, they make an effort to keep you, but if they don't see your importance, goodbye. The appraisal system's process is unclear, leading to seemingly unfair increments without proper explanation. Personally, those aiming for career progression may experience disappointment. If they find a better worker, your role will suddenly be downgraded without an explanation or new job tasks that are important to the school. However, overall job satisfaction depends on each individual's perspective.
