What’s it like working at Xiamen University Malaysia?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees appreciate the beautiful, modern campus with excellent facilities and scenic views, including a central lake. Staff members value their friendly and supportive colleagues, noting a collaborative environment with minimal office politics. Some employees also highlight the flexible working hours and emphasis on work-life balance, as well as the convenient location near Kuala Lumpur.

However, there are some potential challenges, including a heavy workload that sometimes requires evening and weekend work. The management style tends to be quite hands-on with a top-down structure, and job descriptions are not always clearly defined, leading to tasks outside primary responsibilities. Staff have noted that career advancement opportunities may be limited with unclear promotion criteria, and salaries may not always reflect experience levels. Additionally, some employees have expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the HR department and find communication with senior management challenging.

Poor pay and unclear appraisals leave senior staff unappreciated and demotivated
The good thingsThe workplace has a pleasant environment with good colleagues and nice scenery, though this may depend on which department you are in.
The challengesThe salary is underpaid and not competitive. Even after working for more than seven years, there is hardly any difference compared to new joiners. Promotion to a new position only comes with a minimal increment of about 2–3%, which does not reflect the added responsibilities. The appraisal system’s process is unclear, leading to seemingly unfair increments without proper explanation. Staff efforts are not well appreciated. Communication with top management is difficult, and there seems to be double standards when it comes to Admin staff. Because of these issues, many experienced staff have already resigned. Personally, those aiming for career progression may experience disappointment.
