They often work in both residential and commercial settings, ensuring that indoor environments remain comfortable and safe. Air Conditioning Technicians are often required to understand building regulations, safety guidelines and that systems meet sustainability standards.
Tasks and duties
- Installing, maintaining and repairing air conditioning systems and equipment.
- Identifying maintenance risks on equipment.
- Diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
- Cleaning, adjusting and repairing systems as well as performing warranty services.
- Understanding detailed diagrams and blueprints for installing and fixing HVAC units.
- Performing emergency repairs promptly and efficiently.
- Providing technical direction and on-the-job training.
How to become an Air Conditioning Technician
Becoming an Air Conditioning Technician mainly requires technical training, and practical experience in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
- 1.Obtain a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia-Vocational (SPVM).
- 2.Consider obtaining a Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level 3 in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician (Commercial), Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician (Domestic), or HVAC Installation and Maintenance Supervision.
- 3.Additionally, pursue a diploma or degree in air conditioning and refrigeration technology.
- 4.Gain hands-on experience through internships or apprenticeships with HVAC companies to learn installation, maintenance, and repair techniques.
- 5.Stay updated on advancements in technology and regulations in the field by attending workshops or upskilling courses.
