What's it like to be a Mechanic?
Mechanics keep businesses running by ensuring that machines and equipment are working smoothly and efficiently. They apply their knowledge and expertise in machine, hydraulic and electrical systems in a wide range of industries such as aviation, construction, electronics, energy and manufacturing.
Tasks and duties
- Building machinery and assembling machine components according to specifications.
- Operating machines and equipment.
- Troubleshooting problems. Mechanics routinely inspect machines and equipment to prevent breakdowns.
- Performing emergency repairs. Breakdowns lead to delays so mechanics need to be quick to repair broken or damaged machinery.
- Cleaning machines and components.
- Testing new machines and equipment. Mechanics check for functionality issues so that these can be addressed promptly.
- Performing safety checks.
- Maintaining the workshop and tools.
The work of Mechanics involves assembling machines and machine components, as well as operating and keeping machines and equipment in top shape. They aim to make the machinery reliable and safe. They are skilled in problem-solving, are good with their hands, and have an eye for detail.
How to become a Mechanic
You do not need formal education to become a Mechanic but most jobs require at least a secondary school certificate, a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certificate, a graduate diploma in engineering (mechanical) or equivalent certificate from a technical institute.
- 1.Complete secondary school to receive a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certificate.
- 2.Alternatively, obtain a graduate diploma in engineering (mechanical) or an equivalent certificate from a technical institute. Technical programs can be completed in two years.
- 3.Apply in the aviation, construction, electronics, energy or manufacturing industries.
- 4.Gain work experience through training or learn on-site through an apprenticeship.
- 5.With experience, you can move up to Senior Mechanic or Chief Mechanic. Some senior mechanics opt to open their own repair shops.
