What's it like to be a Demi Chef?
Demi Chefs assist higher-level chefs and help with the preparation of meals. Demi Chefs can also help to cook and present food for serving, and sometimes work at a designated station in a kitchen.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing and cooking food.
- Assisting in all activities in the kitchen.
- Cleaning, tidying and maintaining the kitchen and tools.
- Upholding health and safety standards in the kitchen.
- Providing customer service to staff and customers.
How to become a Demi Chef
You don’t need a formal qualification to become a Demi Chef, however a relevant qualification may boost your employability and offer greater opportunities for career progression.
- Get experience in the kitchen. Prior experience in the kitchen is a must in this role, as you will be expected to perform an array of culinary skills up to the standards of the restaurant. One can practise cooking meals at home or small neighbourhood restaurants to learn the ropes.
- Consider completing a formal education in culinary arts or science. Although there is no formal education requirement for many roles in the kitchen, having a bachelor degree or certificate in culinary arts or science will help you progress to higher roles in the industry such as Executive Chef. Examples of schools in Malaysia include Le Cordon Bleu, Berjaya University College of Hospitality, and Cilantro Culinary academy.
- Obtain a certificate in food safety. This may be a requirement for some restaurants.
