What's it like to be a Firefighter?
Firefighters go through intensive training to master firefighting techniques, respond to fire emergencies, and rescue people and animals. They work in long shifts and must be prepared to respond to an emergency at any time. As they are exposed to life-threatening situations, they must meet specific qualifications and go through rigorous training. They are trained in ways to fight fires and to rescue and save people and animals. They must make quick decisions onsite while communicating with fellow firefighters.Tasks and duties
- Recognising fire hazards.
- Properly classifying types of fire.
- Assessing severity of fires.
- Operating fire prevention and fighting equipment such as fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and hose reels.
- Applying correct fire extinguishing techniques.
- Providing information to first-responders.
- Coordinating with fellow firefighters.
- Performing rescues of individuals and animals in physical danger.
How to become a Firefighter
Most fire departments will require aspiring firefighters to have at the minimum completed their high school education. They must also be of legal age and be physically fit to endure the training sessions and risks present in actual fire emergencies.
- 1.Complete secondary school and obtain the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia). Having a college degree may be advantageous.
- 2.Secure a driver's license.
- 3.Test negative for drug use.
- 4.Pass written examinations offered by any of the fire and rescue academies recognised by the Fire And Rescue Department of Malaysia (Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia).
- 5.Pass job interviews and meet physical standards for endurance, flexibility, and strength.
- 6.Complete on-the-job training on fire prevention and firefighting techniques.
- 7.Learn about disaster preparedness, emergency measures, and fire safety.
