What's it like to be a Forklift Driver?
A Forklift Driver is primarily responsible for operating a forklift to move, locate, relocate, stack and count merchandise in a warehouse setting. They are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment, as well as routine maintenance. Forklift Drivers usually need a good understanding of health and safety regulations when operating heavy machinery. They often need to accurately manage inventory which can be physically demanding. Forklift Drivers regularly work within logistics operations in warehouses or industrial settings including manufacturing, retail and shipping industries.
Tasks and duties
- Loading and unloading goods from vehicles such as lorries or aircraft.
- Checking loads are secure and stacking empty pallets.
- Performing daily equipment checks and keep the forklift in working condition.
- Examining products to verify conformance to quality standards.
- Dumping materials into machine hoppers.
How to become a Forklift Driver
A minimum of an STPM and a Class H (tractor) driver’s license are required for the role. Experience in operating machinery in the manufacturing and logistics industry is an advantage. Forklift drivers are also expected to know and comply with health and safety standards.
- 1.Complete an STPM preferably with Math and Science subjects.
- 2.Obtain a Class H driver’s license by passing the Highway Code exam and tractor training.
- 3.Consider taking a training course, such as Safe Handling of Forklift Truck Training.
- 4.Gain work experience in a factory, warehouse or transportation company.
