What's it like to be a Mathematics Teacher?
Mathematics Teachers teach students general and specialised subjects within mathematics. Specialised subjects may include algebra, geometry, statistics, trigonometry and calculus. They possess strong math skills and knowledge and are able to communicate math principles effectively to their students. They help students learn mathematical concepts and understand the connection between abstract concepts and real-world problems.
Tasks and duties
- Organising and managing a classroom.
- Preparing lesson plans, homework, tests and quizzes.
- Grading exams and homework and returning them with appropriate feedback.
- Teaching students individually and in group settings.
- Applying the most appropriate learning strategies and best practices and establishing teaching goals.
- Motivating students through the use of engaging discussions.
- Determining grading standards and issuing final grades.
- Staying up-to-date on mathematics teaching methods and requirements.
- Working one-on-one with students who may need additional help.
- Preparing lessons that align with teaching goals and standards.
- Assigning homework and classroom activities.
How to become a Mathematics Teacher
Although the requirements for being a Mathematics Teacher vary, the general requirement is a completion of a four-year college degree with a major in mathematics or a subfield of mathematics.
- Complete a bachelor degree in mathematics or a subfield of mathematics. The most common degrees include Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education and Bachelor of Education (Secondary).
- In most cases, you will be required to complete the mandated number of hours for your student internship program.
- If you aspire to teach, then you have to pass the state-required examinations that assess general knowledge and basic skills, along with professional knowledge and specific subject area knowledge.
- Apply for a teaching certificate. In order to become a certified teacher, you’ll need to take the teacher certification exam that will help you become a professionally qualified teacher.
