What's it like to be a Pastry Chef?
A Pastry Chef specialises in creating desserts, pastries, breads and other baked products. Within this role, responsibilities include creating recipes, decorating, ingredient selection and menu planning. In addition, this role can involve management tasks such as supervising and training kitchen staff and teaching them about quality. Pastry chefs often work in bakeries, restaurants, patisseries and hotels.
Tasks and duties
- Creating, testing and refining recipes for pastries, desserts and baked goods.
- Preparing and baking pastries, cakes, tarts, chocolates and other sweets.
- Ordering supplies, maintain inventory, cleanliness and functionality of workspaces and utensils.
- Managing and training other members of the pastry team about quality and consistency.
- Working with restaurant or bakery management to plan and price menu items.
- Consulting with clients to discuss custom orders, including theme, flavours and dietary restrictions.
- Arranging and assembling display cases with pastries, desserts and other baked products.
How to become a Pastry Chef
A course in baking and pastry-making is the minimum requirement for the role. A bachelor degree and previous experience in pastry-making or working in kitchens are an advantage.
- 1.Get a minimum of 2Cs at STPM, 2Es at A Level, or the grade equivalent for eligibility to take a Pastry diploma.
- 2.Complete a course, diploma or degree in baking and pastry-making.
- 3.Gain experience by starting a small pastry business, getting an apprenticeship or working as a Commis Chef.
