What's it like to be a Production Operator?
Whether they package food products or make clothes, factories rely on Production Operators to ensure that all machines are running smoothly. Production Operators are responsible for the upkeep of equipment to ensure that the production line remains on schedule.Tasks and duties
- Inspecting the efficiency and durability of equipment and making repairs or replacement when necessary.
- Performing regular maintenance to meet production quality expectations.
- Feeding raw materials into machines.
- Interpreting blueprints and performing tests on finished products.
- Operating trucks and other vehicles to transport equipment and materials to various locations.
- Following direct orders from the factory supervisor.
- Reporting any hazardous operations to the supervisor immediately.
How to become a Production Operator
Formal education isn’t necessary to become a Production Operator. However, employers tend to hire experienced applicants.
- 1.In some workplaces that deal with high-tech equipment, you may need to complete your secondary school education or the SKM Level 3. It will also be beneficial if you are adept in computer software and hardware, mechanics, and general mathematics. Many Production Operator jobs require prior experience in a role such as a Cashier or a Customer Service Representative.
- 2.Choose an industry. This is important because there are many industries that offer employment to Production Operators, such as food and beverage, clothes, mining or transport.
- 3.Apply for an entry level position where you can also learn through on-the-job training. Take this time to familiarise yourself with the routine in the factory, and develop an understanding about the machinery and equipment that you will operate and perform maintenance on.
