What’s it like working at IBM?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees value the extensive learning and development opportunities at IBM, with access to free courses, certifications, and professional growth platforms in the IT industry. The flexible working arrangements, including work from home options and flexible hours, are appreciated, along with supportive colleagues and management who provide guidance. Many enjoy the international exposure and opportunity to collaborate with global teams, whilst the positive working environment and convenient office locations add to the appeal. IBM also offers structured programmes for fresh graduates, providing clear pathways to senior roles.

However, there are some potential challenges to consider. Salary progression can be modest, with slow yearly increments and performance bonuses that may be lower than expected, particularly for BPO projects. Work-life balance can be demanding, with expectations to work overtime, during public holidays, and outside regular hours to support international operations. Many employees mention heavy workloads and complex tasks, particularly in accounting and customer-facing roles. Career progression may be unclear or slow, with limited upward mobility due to competition and role specialisation. Additionally, training for new hires could benefit from improvement, and there is a backup culture where employees may need to cover for colleagues, increasing individual workloads.

Gained valuable exposure to global operations and workforce planning.
The good thingsI have had the privilege of working with a very well-established international company that provided me with the opportunity to grow across multiple areas of workforce management. My experience with IBM Consulting has allowed me to develop expertise in global operations, strategic workforce planning, and leadership, while benefiting from the resources and professional development opportunities of a multinational organization.
The challengesChange happens quickly in today’s business landscape, and I believe that human connection is essential to navigating it successfully. In workforce management, building trust, fostering collaboration, and maintaining strong relationships are far more impactful than relying solely on technology. For this role, I see human connection as the foundation for driving results, motivating teams, and ensuring sustainable success.

It’s a good stepping stone for new graduates or if you’re looking to work 3-5 years here. Your work experience and environment is highly dependent on the team/department you’re in.
The good things- The working environment here is positive. Team leads and managers are willing to provide support and guidance to their staffs. - Flexibility is still here with regards to WFH, though it’s highly dependent on the team leads. - The work here is fairly simple and siloed. You’re only expected to your job scope which is good if that’s what you’re looking for. - Office location is near MRT and next to a mall which is convenient.
The challenges- Poor/lack of staff benefits and slow yearly salary progression unless you get a promotion and band upgrade. - Yearly performance bonus is very low. Expect 10% - 20% of your MONTHLY salary as your bonus, and this is if you’re exceeding expectations. - Poor work life balance. We’re expected to work during public holidays, major long holidays, Christmas and NYE for the sake of supporting the business. The pay and bonus do not commensurate with the effort required to support. - Strong backup culture. If you are teamed with a deadweight then you are expected to cover his/her tasks. - Mediocrity is rewarded. It doesn’t pay to go the extra mile.
