What's it like to be an Automotive Mechanic?
Automotive Mechanics apply their knowledge of mechanics and automotive computer systems to keep cars and light trucks running efficiently. They need to be familiar with the mechanical profiles and specifications of a wide range of vehicles as well as computerised testing and repair systems.
Tasks and duties
- Inspecting and test driving vehicles.
- Testing vehicles for performance issues using diagnostic software.
- Assessing problems and proposing solutions.
- Estimating cost for labour and parts.
- Repairing mechanical, air conditioning and electrical issues, as well as body work.
- Performing routine maintenance jobs such as oil and belt changes.
- Maintaining repair and service records.
- Keeping the work bay and workshop clean and safe.
- Maintaining tools and workshop equipment.
Customers go to Automotive Mechanics when they have car trouble. As a result, they need to be able to communicate well with customers to properly assess problems and discuss solutions. Automotive Mechanics need to be physically fit to keep up with the demands of the job such as lifting car parts and equipment. They also need to be skilled in using tools and diagnostic software.
How to become an Automotive Mechanic
To be an Automotive Mechanic, you need a Secondary School or SKM 2 certificate in automotive repair. Experience is an advantage, especially when working with continental cars. Additional certifications can be gained if you wish to specialise in specific areas such as refrigerants, brakes, transmission or front-end.
- 1.Complete secondary school or obtain an SKM 2 certificate in automotive repair from a technical institute.
- 2.Undertake an apprenticeship at a garage or automotive repair shop. The more experience you gain with a variety of cars and light trucks, the more employable you will become.
- 3.Consider pursuing a specialisation in refrigerants, brakes, transmission or front-end by taking certificate courses from technical institutes or through on-the-job training.
