What's it like to be a Nanny?
As childcare providers, Nannies meet the caring needs of their employers’ children. This includes ensuring that children adequately eat, play, rest, and are intellectually stimulated through a variety of activities. Nannies make sure that children practise good hygiene, and are kept safe under their watch. Aside from childcare duties, some employers may require nannies to help with household chores such as cleaning and cooking.
Tasks and duties
- Scheduling and supervising activities for the day.
- Accompanying or transporting children to activities outside the home.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and neatness of areas used by children such as the playroom and bedroom.
- Keeping children entertained, and physically and mentally active.
- Giving children opportunities for downtime or rest.
- Speaking with parents about their child’s behaviour and activities.
- Partnering with parents to ensure their child’s holistic development.
Nannies may live with the families, whose children they tend to. Or they may work on a live-out basis, wherein they go back to their own homes after completing shifts. Nannies may be directly hired by households, or through agencies.
