What's it like to be a Primary School Teacher?
Being a Primary School Teacher means being responsible for the learning and development of school-age children. You will provide children with constructive feedback, foster their knowledge, skills, and capabilities as well as care for their well-being inside or outside the classroom by assessing and opening dialogue that the school allows. Primary School Teachers will keep the children’s parents up to date on their progress, further evaluating students’ learning through homework and other special tasks.Tasks and duties
- Planning, preparing, and presenting lessons.
- Ensuring orderliness and children’s safety in a classroom environment.
- Assessing a child’s progress based on homework, quizzes, and other coursework.
- Organising the classroom while managing its operations and expectations.
- Coordinating activities and resources that fall under a specific area within the curriculum.
- Maintaining an open line with parents regarding students’ progress.
- Developing engaging and stimulating activities for effective learning.
How to become a Primary School Teacher
There are different paths you can take in order to become a Primary School Teacher in Malaysia.
- 1.Aspiring Teachers must take the Program Persediaan Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perguruan (PPISMP), a one-year preparatory course before they enter the four-year Program Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perguruan (PISMP). The five-year programme allows graduates to teach at government primary schools across Malaysia. You can apply for the programme directly through the Ministry of Education’s official portal.
- 2.After taking your Malaysian secondary certificate or Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), you can also proceed to take up Matriculation for one or two years.
- 3.You may also choose to take up a diploma in education first before pursuing a bachelor degree in education. If you choose this path, you will be able to head straight to the second year of your degree programme.
- 4.To better equip yourself, you may also choose to take on specialties that help you provide better learning experiences for children with special needs through a masters degree or by joining workshop or certification programmes.
