What's it like to be a Retail Sales Assistant?
Retail Sales Assistants are often working directly on shop floors providing customer-facing services. Their key responsibilities include assisting customers with purchasing decisions, working the cash register, stocking shelves and ensuring the store remains tidy and visually appealing. They often work in settings such as high street shops like boutiques, department stores, supermarkets and specialist retailers. The role requires a keen focus on customer service and can often involve working during peak shopping periods including weekends, evenings and holidays.
Tasks and duties
- Greeting customers and providing guidance on finding products they need.
- Assisting shoppers with selecting products, answering queries and providing product recommendations.
- Handling sales transactions at the cash register, including cash, card or digital payments.
- Maintaining the appearance of the store, ensuring it is clean, tidy and products are well-organised.
- Checking product stock levels and helping with restocking activities when necessary.
- Managing customer complaints or forwarding complex issues to the store manager.
- Promoting store sales or loyalty programs to customers.
How to become a Retail Sales Assistant
At least an SPM is required for the role. Prior related work experience and a degree in retail or sales are an advantage.
- 1.Finish a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
- 2.Gain work experience in customer service, sales, retail or another related field.
- 3.Consider getting a bachelor degree in retail sales management.
