What's it like to be a Truck Driver?
Truck Drivers play a vital role in ensuring timely delivery of goods across different locations. Their main responsibilities involve loading and delivering goods, maintaining delivery logs, ensuring that their vehicle is in good condition, and complying with truck driving rules and regulations. Due to the nature of the work, they often have irregular schedules and may have to spend extended periods away from home. Industries that frequently employ truck drivers are transport companies, moving companies, and organisations that require the transport of its products, such as supermarkets and manufacturing companies. Depending on the role and employer, specialised licenses could be required for operation of certain vehicles.
Tasks and duties
- Operating and maintaining trucks with a capacity of more than 3.5 tonnes to transport goods to and from specified destinations.
- Inspecting vehicles for mechanical items and safety issues, and performing preventative maintenance.
- Planning routes and meeting delivery schedules outlined by the company.
- Logging and reporting any defects, accidents or violations.
- Complying with truck driving rules and regulations (size, weight, route designations, and parking and rest periods) as well as with company policies and procedures.
- Completing documentation such as work and delivery orders, receipts, and trip reports.
- Ensuring the secure and accurate loading of trucks, checking goods' condition and ensuring the accuracy of delivery documentation.
How to become a Truck Driver
A minimum of a driver’s licence and prior truck experience are required for the role.
- 1.Meet the minimum requirements for a driver’s licence, including having good vision up to 23 metres and physical fitness. Candidates with disabilities may be confirmed for eligibility by government clinics.
- 2.Obtain a Competent Driving License (CDL) in E Class (trucks of all classes, including with unloaded weight exceeding 7500kg).
- 3.Gain experience through contractor, freelance and company jobs.
