Can I lie about getting another job offer that doesn't exist just to get a higher salary? I recently got a job offer that’s about 10% more than my current pay. It’s a good opportunity, but honestly I was hoping for at least 20% increment because I've been underpaid for so long. But during interview the manager was super firm about the salary like it's non-negotiable. Now I’m wondering... if I lie, can their HR know? Will HR ask for proof of the other offer? What happens if they found out?

I wouldn’t recommend lying about another offer, it’s a risky move. Some hiring teams will ask for details or even proof, and if it doesn’t check out, that can ruin the whole deal. Better move? Be transparent about what you’re looking for and why. You can even say you’re exploring other roles in that range without claiming you’ve got a formal offer in hand.

I feel you. I’ve also been underpaid before and it’s so tempting to just “create” an offer. But seriously, don’t. HR always has ways to find out and if they do, you’ll lose the offer and your credibility. Better angle is to say you’re exploring other opportunities in that range, still gives you leverage without actually lying.

I feel you 😭 sometimes they say “fixed” but still got a bit of wiggle room. Try asking politely if there’s any flexibility. worst case, they say no. Best case, you get that extra 10% 😉

It’s understandable to want fair compensation, especially if you’ve felt underpaid. But honesty is always the best approach. Lying about another offer can easily backfire, HR teams often verify information or can sense inconsistencies, which could harm your reputation or even the offer itself. A better approach would be to negotiate based on your skills, experience, and market value. This shows professionalism and confidence without risking your credibility.

10% increment in a new job isn't worth it. At least need to be 30%. Please no lying about another job offer. If you're truly competent and actively seeking new job, you will get true offer.

Its a 50/50 success rate in my opinion. If you are the backbone of the company (even low level job can be one), maybe they will try to counter offer as many of my friend have done this. If not, they might find a new guy to replace you. The best strategy is to make sure you are irreplaceble or hard to find. you do need to have some certification/skill that can compensate and become your leverage while asking for more salary. Hope thats help.

Telling lies will ruin your reputation. And eventually people can find out that you've lied. Do it right at the first time so that you don't have to tell another lie to cover the previous lie...

This is simply smart negotiation. While targeting 20% ensures you land at least 15% (a good win-win), your goal when switching companies should always be an aggressive 30% increase. That's where the best deals are found.

Let's be honest here. You just want an increase in Salary. The best way is to talk to your Boss. Ask what needs to be done to get that increase and also, recollect what you have done for the past year, etc. Ask how you can contribute to the Company's Plan and not just a worker. The Lie can easily surface and in the worse case scenario where they call your bluff, you'd have lost your credibility and cannot be relied on.
