Salah ke balik on time? Ya, i fresh grad, baru masuk kerja. But offer letter cakap kerja 8am-5pm only. I came on time, i finished my tasks of the day, so by 5pm i nak balik lah kan? But my manager said, they all normally stayed back until 7-8pm bcz they wanna avoid traffic jam & to sembang2. I was like?? Can't we just socialize during lunch time?? And masa interview takde cakap pulak kena OT/stayback. Now hari2 i TERPAKSA balik lambat. I'm SO ANNOYED. How do i balik on time now pls tell me!!

Seriously! Kalau dalam offer letter cakap 8am-5pm, memang you should be able to balik on time. Tak sepatutnya kena stayback kalau tak ada dalam terms of employment. Let them know you prefer to stick to the hours in your offer letter, and see if they can accommodate that. Kalau still macam tu juga, mungkin you need to set clear boundaries, balik je on time, but buat kerja dengan efficient so takde reason for extra hours.

You have every right to leave on time if your tasks are completed. Staying late shouldn’t be seen as a norm or requirement. Work life balance is essential, leaving on time reflects good time management and respect for your personal well-being. I would encourage you to communicate this respectfully with your manager. Highlight how maintaining balance helps you stay productive and focused. It's crucial to stand up for your boundaries while being professional.
Take care and prioritize yourself.

Ni sebenarnya manager nak suro stay back n buat kerja tp xnk bayar OT. After 5pm, its your life, not manager's life. Jgn layan manager bangang camtu. Suka hati la nak buat apa lepas 5pm.

Yep,happened to me before.Worse, the manager told to my face that I cannot claim OT because of my position. So sometimes I stayed back &do some work until 9pm.But sometimes I just said bye &walked out at 5pm,he would screamed at me saying nasty stuff.I told him I need to pick up my wife from work, but he said my wife should understand that I work for the company now.big boss from Hq called me one day, told me that I can actually claimOT. I resigned from the company after only a month there.

Kalau dalam job description tak mention OT, memang you tak perlu buat overtime. You boleh cuba approach manager you with a calm tone, and cakap yang you prefer balik on time since it's stated in your offer letter. Kalau still tak boleh, you boleh buat routine where you finish your tasks before 5pm, and politely remind them you need to head off on time. I’m sure they’ll understand kalau you set the boundary well.

Kenapa nak buat overtime bila you don’t even get compensated for it? Kalau memang company tak buat it clear during the interview or in the offer letter, it’s unfair for them to expect you to stay back. They can’t just force you to stay for socializing. At this point, you really need to speak up and tell them you’re leaving on time, no more playing along.

Just go back on time. Prioritise yourself. There's so many thing you can fill your time with, with self development activity. If you want to stay back once in a while to maintain good relationship it's okay, but every day, you're spending too much time there. Go back, read books, learn something new, or just rest. As long as you are out of work.
We millenials were taught that stayback is extra mark for performance, but our work-life balance is impossible. Don't normalise it, do better.
