I’m a manager and recently reached out to a candidate with only 1 year of working experience. Our job offer was about 10% higher than his current salary, but he needs to also work half-day on Saturdays. He immediately rejected the interview, saying the pay was too low and he doesn't want to work weekends. When I tried to explain, he called me unreasonable. I wasn’t expecting such a strong reaction from someone still early in their career. Anyone else faced this attitude with current Gen Z?

I’m a gen z here. 10% extra pay plus work on saturdays? That is a joke🤣 That saturdays worth more than 35% to be honest.

This sounds like a classic clash of expectations between older and younger generations. Gen Z tends to value work-life balance and clear boundaries more than previous generations did at their age. It’s a learning curve for both sides so maybe companies need to rethink how they attract and retain young talent without compromising their operational needs.

Sorry, your offer is disrespectful. It got nothing to do with the Gen class. So for 10% more, he got to work extra 16 hours per month? Thats not a pay bump, thats an offer to work overtime without proper overtime compensation.

I think this is less about attitude and more about shifting priorities. Most of us in this generation grew up hearing about toxic hustle culture, we just don’t want to repeat that. I do think how you communicate the value of the role matters a lot though. Transparency goes a long way with Gen Z.

I see this as part of a broader cultural shift towards sustainability not just environmentally but socially too. Gen Z tends to expect employers to respect their time and promote healthy work habits. Maybe offering flexible working arrangements or highlighting your organisation’s sustainability initiatives could make the role more appealing to these candidates.

I’m not from Gen Z, but i believe in self-worth and setting clear boundaries. I choose career opportunities that align with my values , rather than simply fitting into roles based on others’ expectations.

Our grandparents went to work due to necessity. Our parents went to work for quality of life. So what do the current generation work for? If u can answer this question, you’ll understand why the current generation of the workforce behaves in such a way. Additionally, recruiters and managers need to understand that corporate loyalty is no longer something they can expect from the younger generation.
