Trying so hard to be a good leader, but instead of respect, all I get is attitude. Just because I’m younger, my team thinks they can ignore what I say, push back on decisions, and do things their own way. When I’m firm, I’m “too strict.” When I try to be understanding, they take advantage and walk all over me. Boss expects me to manage them, but how do you lead people who don’t even want to listen? Feels like I’m the one being bullied here.

It’s difficult to manage a team that doesn’t seem to respect you, especially when they push back on every decision. My suggestion would be to have a heart-to-heart with the team and let them know how their actions are affecting the group dynamics. At the same time, make it clear that you’re in charge and they need to respect that. Consistency is key, you don’t have to be harsh, but you definitely need to assert your authority.

That’s really tough, but I’m sure you can handle it! It might help to sit down with the team and set clear expectations on behavior and communication. Let them know that while you value their input, you are the one making the decisions. It’s all about finding that balance between empathy and assertiveness. Once they see that you’re consistent in your leadership, they’ll start respecting you more.
