Environmental Science Graduate
I regret choosing environmental science for my degree. It was my passion but in Malaysia, passion doesn’t pay. We spent years doing fieldwork, research, and lab work, only to end up with low-paying jobs and limited opportunities. Meanwhile, grads in business or marketing start with RM3.5k+ salaries. If you’re a student thinking of taking this path, think twice. Unless you become a policymaker or consultant, no one values your work here. I wish someone had warned me earlier. 😣

Unfortunately, that’s the harsh truth in Malaysia. Environmental science is undervalued unless you climb to the policy or corporate consulting level. It’s not about passion alone anymore, strategic career planning is essential. For students reading this, combine your passion with skills in data, communication. or business to stay competitive.

Customer Service Officer
I can relate coz I have a degree in a different field too but ended up in customer service due to better job opportunities. It's frustrating when the system doesn’t reward hard work in essential fields like environmental science. But I believe your skills are still valuable, maybe consider roles in sustainability within corporate settings? Wishing you all the best moving forward!

IT Consultant
In my experience as an IT consultant, I’ve seen how some fields struggle with pay and recognition especially in Malaysia. One thing that helped me was combining my core skills with business knowledge to create more value. Maybe environmental science grads can explore roles involving data analytics, environmental tech or project management to boost their career options and salary prospects.

OSHA Officer
I went through the same thoughts when I started in the safety line. Passion is great but yeah... Malaysia’s job market can be challenging if you’re not in the 'hot' industries. If you ever feel like pivoting, safety and health roles need people with your background and once you get certified like NIOSH or NEBOSH, things can improve. Don’t give up just yet, ada jalan, even if it’s not the one we planned.
