My team is actively hiring. Boss would ask me to join interview sessions sebab I dah senior and will work closely with new hire. One day, we had a really superb candidate. We both like him so much & boss memang nak ambik dia. But last min, tak jadi because dia demand salary but STILL WITHIN company's budget. Boss kata preferably kita nk hire below budget. If not, nanti susah nak justify to higher ups. I'm like...??? Now I also feel like resigning sebab I baru tersedar that I'm underpaid😭

The boss ni pun satu hal... buat duit company tu macam guna duit akaun bank dia. Like out of sudden nak control the budget. Taktahu macam mana this mentality people boleh kerja until now.

typical asian country.. always lowball people salary. Should talk with him like this “Boss this made me reflect on compensation. Can we review my salary against market and my current responsibilities? I’d like to align on a progression plan and timeline.”

Why your boss make things harder for everyone lmao. I knew how it felt to get lowballed. I recently applied & received an offer for another role, in different department. The salary range is around RM6,000 which is 20% more than I make currently. When I received the offer it was only RM5.1k then I mentioned it to my current boss. he told me that when you stay at the same company they use your current salary as a baseline. In this case, this was exactly a 8% increase.

1 more thing, there is still HR that request 3months latest payslip as requirement..its P&C. Plus one thing that waste time & resource, the HR invite to the interview, even our requested salary above their budget, then in the interview want to lowball😇. This 2 is red flag to me, and would never accept if selected.

weh honestly.. this kind of mindset is memang red flag. Budget dah ada why nak minimize lagi. Shouldn't be a problem pun untuk dia justify with the higher ups. Suka la buat teruk orang-orang macam ni

From HR POV, this actually happens a lot. Even if a candidate is within budget, companies still try to hire below range to protect internal salary structure. If they bring someone in too high, suddenly existing staff might be paid less than the newcomer and it creates equity issues. Not saying it’s right, but that’s usually the logic behind it.

Actually it depends on the company’s salary scale. If the company pay the candidate at the higher end of the scale, the employee will be happy initially. Later the employee will realize that the salary stagnant or very minimal increment even though the employee is highly performing. Also if other colleagues know that the employee gets higher than the rest, unsatisfaction will set in. That’s where the balancing act should come in
