Operations Team Leader
I’ve been in my role for a while now, and I feel ready to step up into a management position. But instead of jumping straight in, I was thinking—can I ask for a “trial run” as a manager first? Like taking on temporary leadership duties to prove I’m capable before making it official. How do I bring this up without sounding unsure or overstepping? Anyone ever tried this approach before? Would love to hear if it worked and how you pitched the idea!

I think it’s a great idea! You could pitch it as, ‘I feel ready to take on more responsibility, and I’d love to have a go at leading for a bit to see if it’s a good fit for me and for the team.’ Just keep it casual but confident, showing you're up for the challenge but not rushing into anything. It’ll show initiative without overstepping.

I totally get where you're coming from! Maybe say something like, ‘I’ve been thinking I’m ready to step into a leadership role, and I’d love to try taking on some management tasks temporarily to see how I handle it.’ Keep it low pressure, but show you’re keen to take that next step. Most managers will appreciate that kind of proactive approach.

Love this idea! Maybe frame it as, ‘I feel ready to take on more, and I’m wondering if I can try leading a team or some projects for a bit. I think it’d help me prove myself and see if I’m a good fit for the role long-term.’ That way, it’s not like you’re asking for a full promotion, but you’re showing you’re ready to step up. Sounds like a win-win!
