Culture shock ialah bila you dari company SME medium-size, and everyone at the office is pretty kepochi but friendly and then you got into a big GLC, thinking people will be better but actually semua orang buat hal masing2, cold & only friendly bila nak pertolongan you je. Honestly, I miss my old company. Even tak kenal pun still tegur & always smiling. "Good morning, dah makan ke?" Now? Jangan harap lah. Unless it's about work, ppl don't randomly talk to you. Sedih kan? Reality check for me 🥲

Business Development Role
Same thing happened to me before. I left a small company where everyone was super close to each other. We’d chat over coffee, joke in meetings, even help each other out without asking. Then I joined a big MNC thinking, “Wow, next level professionalism!” But nope… everyone was polite but distant, only talking if it’s about work. No random small talk, no “lunch together?” moments. I didn’t realize how much I’d miss that human touch until it was gone. 🥲

SMEs usually have that kampung vibe like people connect naturally and there's less hierarchy in day-to-day interactions. Bila masuk GLC/MNC, everything feels formal, segmented… even “Hi” pun tunggu context 😔
Culture shock is real and sadly not everyone talks about it.

I feel you! Same thing happened to me when I moved from a small agency to a big corp. From daily “jom lunch!” to… total silence unless it's in a meeting invite 🥲
As someone in brand marketing, I selalu rasa culture tu part of the brand jugak. Kalau internal vibe pun tak warm, susah nak deliver that warmth outside kan?

Saya pun dari SME ke MNC. Vibe sangat2 berbeza. Memang culture berbeza tapi sebab terbiasa dengan culture SME jadi bila join MNC ni selamba je tegur dengan orang tak kenal. Sampai cleaner pun hari hari wish “Good Morning, Boss”. Layan jelah.

Unlike me from MNC to SME. Minding my own thing, isolating most of the time sbb dah terbiasa culture and only chat about work. Got labelled as not proactive and got terminated:)

Customer Service Team Leader
In my old team we made it a point to greet everyone, even if we were stressed. That kind of energy keeps the team alive. Bila masuk company besar, semua ikut script je. Semua polite, yes but tak ada jiwa. Memang susah nak build that trust kalau semua orang buat hal masing-masing.

But after i moving too GLC, i rasaaaa alonee, bcs vibes at new placeeeee iss different sgt 😩 . Eventhought dekat SME i sorang je malay, tapi alls staff sporting, firstday kerja dah rapat each other. But nowwwwww , i sorang . Apa-apa pun sorang , eventhought tempat i now 100% malay 🥲. Now i stay work here almost 2y 🙂

Every company that you will go to will be the same. Let's face it, we Malaysians are generally not extroverts. But the bright side is you get to study the characters around you and choose who can come close to you and who needs to be kept distant.
